NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. It is an opportunity for all Australians to come together to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait people.
This year’s theme is: Voice, Treaty, Truth.
Please join us for our NAIDOC celebrations on Friday commencing at 9am.
Aboriginal Lord’s Prayer.
You are our Father, You live in Heaven
We talk to You, Father, You are good.
We believe Your Word, Father, we Your children.
Give us bread today.
We have done wrong, we are sorry.
Help us Father, not to sin again.
Others have done wrong, to us
And we are sorry for them, Father today.
Stop us from doing wrong, Father.
Save us all from the evil one.
You are our Father, You live in Heaven.
We talk to You, Father, You are good.
Student Half Yearly Reports
Half yearly reports are released on Friday for Years 1-6 and interviews are currently conducted for Kindergarten. Please take the opportunity to talk about your children’s learning and celebrate their successes. Grade distribution charts will be available from the office from Monday for anyone who wishes to collect one. If you wish to discuss your child’s report with their teacher please make an appointment to see them.
Athletics Carnival
The new date for the athletics carnival is Tuesday 2nd July (with a further backup date of Tuesday 23rd July - Week 1 of Term 3). Unfortunatley, due to insurance and legal requirements new notes need to be signed as transport is involved. New permission notes have been sent home and need to be returned to the school. Please do this promptly so that staff do not have to spend time making phone calls to get permission.
We currently have quite a lot of sickness going through the school. If your child is not well please keep them home to help stop the illness spreading to others.
I will be taking a week’s long service leave next week, Mrs West will be looking after the school in my absence.
Have a lovely week everyone,
Kayleen Petzer
SCHOOL REPORTS (Years 1-6)
Reports will be available via the Compass Parent Portal on Friday 28th June. We no longer print and send home bulk reports as per previous years. For those unable to download or print a copy of the school report, please notify the school in writing and a copy will be printed for you.
Reports will be printed for students in Year 5 as they will be needed for High School enrolment applications.
A reminder that a student profile exists on Compass only for the period of their enrolment at St Michael’s. When they leave St Michael's, their profile will not be accessible. As students' academic reports are provided to families via Compass, it is important that each report be saved to an external location by parents before the student leaves St Michael’s so that it remains accessible in the future (eg for high school application).
Illness
Colder days and chilly nights have set in and influenza (flu) season is here. The flu is much more serious than a cold. Colds, flu and viruses can spread quickly in places, such as schools, where large number of children learn and play in close contact with each other.
What are the symptoms of flu?
People with influenza typically experience some or all of the following symptoms:
- fever and chills
- cough, sore throat and runny or stuffy nose
- muscle aches, joint pains, headaches and fatigue (feeling very tired)
- nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea (more common in children than adults).
Some symptoms may last for more than a week. Some people may also experience very mild symptoms, particularly if they have some immunity from a previous infection or vaccination.
How is flu spread?
Influenza viruses are mainly spread by droplets made when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Influenza can also be spread through touching surfaces where infected droplets have landed.
People with influenza can be infectious from the day before their symptoms start. Adults are most infectious in the first 3-5 days of their illness, while children remain infectious for 7-10 days, and people with weakened immune systems may be infectious for longer.
Please talk to your children about good hygiene practices and how to minimise the spread of infection.
How is flu prevented?
- Sneeze into your elbow - sneeze into your elbow instead of your hands, or cover your face with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw used tissues in a rubbish bin.
- Clean your hands - wash your hands thoroughly and often. Wash hands for at least 10 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose, or use an alcohol-based hand rub.
- Stay at home if sick - If you are sick with flu, stay at home and avoid close contact with other people to prevent them from also becoming sick. Keep sick children away from school and other activities. Wait at least 24 hours after fever resolves so you that you are unlikely to infect other people.
- Get a flu shot - Influenza vaccination each year before winter arrives is the best way to prevent influenza.

Do you know anyone who might be interested in learning more about the Catholic faith? Would you, or someone that you know, perhaps be interested in becoming a Catholic? A gathering will be held tomorrow evening (Wednesday 26 June), at 7.00 p.m. in the Parish Hall, Bowral to outline an instruction course that systematically unpacks our Catholic beliefs. This course will also be open to anyone who would like a refresher in Catholic faith and practice.
Year 3 Maubara Fundraiser
Last Friday Year 3 held a “Coin Trail” fund raiser for Maubara Orphanage in East Timor. It was a wonderful success raising $325.50. Thank you very much to the children and families across the school community who brought in some coins. Thank you to Mrs Walker-Smith and the Year 3 children for creating the coin trail which measured from the Year 3 classroom up to the Kindergarten room!
