Dear Parents & Friends,
As we move into the second half of the term I am constantly reminded of the remarkable work that our teachers do each and every day. At the moment, teachers are finalising assessments and writing reports as well as remaining focused on teaching the curriculum to our children. As previously communicated, the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) have undertaken a comprehensive review of the NSW Curriculum, leading to curriculum reform and subsequent implementation of a reformed curriculum which commenced in 2023. In response to the curriculum changes, Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong has made significant modifications to student semester reports for Primary schools to better reflect your child's academic progress at key points throughout the year and provide parents and carers with a clear picture of their child’s strengths and areas for improvement in specific subject areas.
The following changes will be evident in your child’s semester report from Semester 1 2024:
● A ‘new look’ report format released via Compass reflecting the outcomes of the new K-10 English and Mathematics syllabuses providing a descriptor for each of the focus areas found in the respective syllabuses
● All Kindergarten students will now receive a written report in Semester 1 and Semester 2 with a three-point grade scale used to report student achievement using the following performance descriptors:
○ Thorough
○ Sound
○ Basic
● Students in Year 1 - Year 6 will continue to receive semester reports twice a year with a five-point grade scale used to report student achievement using the following performance descriptors:
○ Extensive
○ Thorough
○ Sound
○ Basic
○ Elementary
In addition, during Week 4 the school was selected by NESA for a random short notice inspection. This program involves schools in all sectors and assesses whether schools continue to comply with the requirements, as detailed in the registration manuals and inspecting the quality of teaching and learning programs in alignment with the new K-6 English and Mathematics syllabi. St Michael’s was highly commended for the excellence in regulation requirements and the alignment of teaching and learning programs to the new curriculum. I would like to thank the teaching and administration staff for their care and diligence in ensuring that your children get the best education possible.
Have a blessed week

St Vincent De Paul Winter Food Appeal
Each year during the colder months many people in our community are in need of basic necessities, especially food. Each winter our St Michael’s community runs a non-perishable food drive. This includes any items that can be kept in a pantry for a long period of time. St Vincent De Paul Mittagong makes this food available for the people of need in our community. Starting from Monday 24th June to Friday the 5th July we will hold our annual drive. A list of items for each class will be sent home before the above date. Thank you for your support on behalf of the St Vincent De Paul Society.
Hot Dog Day
Thank you to everyone who helped support Year 6 in their fundraiser to raise funds towards their gift to the school.
Reconciliation Week Liturgy
Each year, Australians have an opportunity during Reconciliation Week to reflect on the past and take action towards a more reconciled Australia. On Monday the 27th May our school community marked the commencement of Reconciliation week with a Liturgy. Thank you to Year 6 for leading our liturgy.

Science and Engineering Day
The Southern Highlands Rotary Club of Bowral - Mittagong offered students from Year 6 the opportunity to be involved in the ‘Southern Highlands Science and Engineering Discovery Day’. The day was held at the Mittagong RSL Club on Tuesday 28th May 2024. The day included a set of fun activities planned to inspire young people about the opportunities available through science, technology and engineering. We were very fortunate to send 8 students from Year 6 that were able to participate. Our wonderful group of students also managed to come third over all. A BIG thank you to Mrs Eggleston for attending this day with Year 6.
PARENT INFORMATION EVENING
On Tuesday 4th June, our teachers from the Infant classes (Kindergarten. Year 1 and Year 2) held an information evening for parents. Mrs Bourke-Nash, Ms Brogan and Mrs Anderson explained the way reading, writing, spelling and mathematics is taught at school, and provided many practical tips and suggestions for parents to try and implement at home. Parents also had the opportunity to ask questions. We are very appreciative of the parents who came along on a cold evening and especially thankful to our three teachers for preparing and presenting such a comprehensive and enlightening meeting. It was a great success!
