Term 2 Week 6
200 YEARS OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION MASS
24TH MAY 2021
Students from 45 of our Catholic schools across the Diocese of Wollongong gathered on Monday for a celebratory Mass to mark 200 years of Catholic Education in Australia.
Bishop Brian Mascord, representatives from Catholic Church agencies, religious orders, and Catholic school principals and students also gathered at St John Vianney Co-Cathedral, Fairy Meadow.
Our Diocese of Wollongong Director of Schools, Mr Peter Hill said during the mass that this celebration was a highlight of the bicentenary year. "Throughout the last two centuries, thousands of dedicated women and men, often with very limited resources, rose to the challenge of building the vibrant and diverse Catholic education system that exists today. As we reflect on the important work of Catholic education, we remember the intergenerational contributions that preceded us and that we continue to build upon.”
Since the very first Catholic school was established in NSW in 1820, countless children and young people have benefited from the dedication and commitment of faith-filled staff in our Catholic schools.
The nationwide celebrations mark the bicentenary of the first 'official' Catholic school, opened in Parramatta in 1820 by Fr John Therry. The first Catholic school in the Diocese of Wollongong, was established in 1828 in Campbelltown.
St Michael's Mittagong was established in 1891, known originally as St Joseph's Catholic School Mittagong, by the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. We are currently celebrating our 130th year of Catholic Education.
Today, Catholic education has grown to 1751 Catholic schools in Australia educating around one in five or 768,000 students and employing 98,000 teachers and staff. The Diocese of Wollongong is home to 38 systemic Catholic schools and seven independent Catholic schools.
In the photo below are students from our combined parish schools of St Michael's Mittagong and St Thomas Aquinas Bowral.I would like to thank Daniel and Emily for representing our school at the Diocesan Celebration Mass on Monday.

- Keeping your child home when they are unwell, even with very mild symptoms.
- Informing the school immediately if your child is self-isolating or undergoing testing, and informing the school of the result as soon as possible. The school must sight your negative result before your child has clearance to come back to school.
- Any child who is sent home from school due to COVID symptoms e.g. temperature, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, NSW Health recommends that you have your child tested for COVID 19 and the school must sight your negative result before your child has clearance to come back to school.

Brainstorm Productions - Buddies
On Tuesday, Brainstorm Productions presented their student wellbeing performance ‘Buddies’ for K-6.
‘Buddies’ is a live educational theatre performance that follows the journey of Lucy and Charlie as they discover the secrets to building positive friendships and staying safe online.
Lucy is impulsive and breaks the rules to try to fit in. Charlie is being bullied, but he's afraid to stand up for himself and show his true feelings. As players in an exciting virtual reality video game, Charlie and Lucy must co-operate to navigate the cyber chamber, overcome the forces of Aggrator, earn the eight Friendship Discs and restore the Ancient Ring of Friendship. They learnt important lessons about online safety, such as not sharing passwords, not talking to strangers, protecting their privacy on apps and games and asking for help if something makes them feel uncomfortable. Together they discover that a true friend is someone who is kind, tells the truth, listens, helps you feel safe and allows you to be yourself.
‘Buddies’ is part of our student wellbeing curriculum and has been developed by teachers and psychologists. This exciting live theatre experience gives students practical skills to make and keep good friends, take a stand against bullying and stay safe online.
Brainstorm Productions is one of Australia’s largest and most respected theatre in education companies, performing to over 360,000 students every year. They offer a range of programs to help schools build healthy and harmonious environments, addressing issues such as cyber safety, bullying, resilience, diversity and inclusion.
