Dear Parents and Carers,
Many events have occurred already this term with one most significant. It is with deep reverence and reflection that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis. As the spiritual leader of our global Catholic community, Pope Francis offered us a profound example of humility, mercy, and compassion. His papacy was marked by a deep commitment to care for the poor, protect our common home, and build a Church that is open, inclusive, and grounded in the Gospel of Christ. His legacy will continue to shape our faith and values at St Michael’s.
The Month of May is very special in the life of the Catholic Church. It is when we honour Mary and pray to her for guidance.
Our Prayer this week honours Mary
Honouring Mary in the Month of May
Loving God,
In this special month of May, we turn our hearts to Mary,
Mother of Jesus and Mother of us all.
We thank you for her gentle example of faith, courage, and love.
May we, like Mary, say “yes” to your call in our lives,
trusting in your plan and walking in your light.
Help us to follow her example by being kind, compassionate,
and faithful in all we do.
We pray for our school community, for our families, and for our world.
May Mary, our Mother, wrap us in her care
and lead us ever closer to your Son, Jesus.
Amen.
Mary, Help of Christians, pray for us.
OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY
It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing this week of Mr Peter Toohey, husband of our wonderful School Support Officer, Mrs Jennine Toohey. We keep Peter, Jennine and their family and friends in our prayers.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.
And let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.
Amen.
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
In the life of our school, we recently celebrated our Athletics Carnival, filled with house spirit, sportsmanship, and fantastic participation. It was so great to see our students encouraging one another and giving their best. Unfortunately the weather was not the best and we were unable to complete all the scheduled events. Those field events will be conducted here at school during the students' sports lessons. A sincere thank you to our staff, volunteers, and families who supported our carnival. Photos from the day are on our Facebook page.
MUSICA VIVA VISIT – INSPIRING YOUNG MUSICIANS
This week, we were delighted to welcome Musica Viva to St Michael’s for a live music performance that truly captivated our students. The talented visiting musicians not only entertained, but also educated our students through rhythm, melody, and storytelling. The students left inspired and energised, with many eager to explore their own musical talents. We are grateful for the opportunity to host such an entertaining program and thank Musica Viva for bringing the joy and richness of live music to our school.
STAGE 3 CANBERRA EXCURSION
On Thursday 15th May, Year 5 and Year 6 students embarked on an excursion to the nation’s capital, Canberra. They participated in a number of educational experiences related to Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The places visited were the Electoral Education Centre, Museum of Australian Democracy, Parliament House and the National Capital Exhibition.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards these costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
WORLD PARENTS DAY- CLASSROOM VISITS, PICNIC LUNCH AND BOOK FAIR
Looking ahead, we are excited to welcome you to our Parents Day on the 30 May – a special opportunity to come together, celebrate our school community, and witness some of the learning and growth happening in classrooms in the area of Mathematics. In a news feed note on Wednesday, I shared the main details with you and by now, you should have received a paper copy of the P&F note regarding your order for lunch and the Book Fair note. I have included digital information from all these notes in this newsletter for easy access. We look forward to seeing you here for our sharing of mathematics ideas, picnic and Book Fair.HELPERS FOR PARENTS DAY
On Parents Day, the P&F are asking for helpers to assist in the Book Fair and preparation of food. If you can help, please contact the school office. A few people did record on the P&F survey that they could help, so the P&F will be in contact with you. The help with preparation of food involves setting up before the classroom visits and starting the bbq. Some of our staff will continue cooking the BBQ whilst classroom visits are on, so all our parents can visit the classrooms.
OFFICE REFURBISHMENT
We are so excited to say that our office and library refurbishment is complete!! For a building works project, at an operating school site, it has gone really well and we were back in our space even earlier than anticipated. A big thank you to the building team and to our staff, especially our Office and Library staff who have been so busy running the administration of the school whilst also packing and unpacking the office and library areas. We are so blessed to have such caring staff members.
When you get a chance, pop in and say hello and have a look at the updated office. Here is a snapshot of the new office area. We still have things to put in place but the main construction is done. When you come to the front office door you will need to press a button and the office staff will let you in. You will hear a noise of the door being released and you just then need to push the door open. This added security is a benefit for our school and the safety of all on site.
MACKILLOP REPRESENTATION
Next week Lucy H from Year 6 will be representing MacKillop in the NSW PSSA Hockey Championships in Newcastle. We wish Lucy all the best for her games. What a wonderful opportunity it is for Lucy and her family.
