Dear parents

As we come to the end of another term, I would like to thank you for your support of our students and staff. Term 3 has been a very eventful and exciting term. Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and special friends who participated in the many activities throughout the term.

Highlights over the past few weeks have been included in the newsletter below.

PRAYER

Our prayer for this week is for all families to have a safe and blessed holiday, sharing special time with their families and friends.

Prayer of Thanksgiving for the term and our families

Loving God,

As we reach the end of this school term, we give thanks for the many blessings we have shared together; the learning, friendships, and moments of faith that have filled our days at St Michael’s.

We pray especially for our families as we begin the holiday break. May this be a time of rest, joy, and connection, where we can enjoy one another’s company and make special memories together.

Keep our children safe in all that they do, and bless every family in our community with peace, love, and happiness until we gather again next term.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

SCHOOL CYCLIC REVIEW

Next term our school will be participating in a cyclic inquiry, which is a review of the last four years of the school. We are looking forward to meeting with the external panel of consultants who will hear about all the wonderful things that have been happening at our school.

Below is information from our Catholic Education about the process of a School Cyclic Inquiry

What is School Cyclic Inquiry?

  • Held every four years, School Cyclic Inquiry is an opportunity for a school to reflect on how effective it has been in the past four years improving the faith, learning and wellbeing of its students.
  • The school prepares a detailed report that identifies its achievements and its challenges over the previous four years, using data and feedback from a wide cross-section of the school community.
  • A panel of experienced, independent Catholic educators spends two days at the school looking closely at the report and talking with the school’s Leadership Team and other members of the school community.
  • The school’s performance over the past four years is measured against the Australian Council of Research National School Improvement Tool as well as the Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong’s Living Catholicity Foundation document.
  • A detailed report is prepared by the panel that includes recommendations for a limited number of improvement priorities that would form the basis of the school’s four-year School Strategic Improvement Plan and its one-year Annual Improvement Plan.

RELIGIOUS LITERACY RESULTS 2025 - FIRST IN THE DIOCESE!

We are so excited to let you know that our Year 4 class as a cohort, came first in the Diocese with their Religious Literacy Assessment which was held earlier this term. The assessment is online and covers content in the religion curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 4.

A big thank you to all the staff who have supported the students with their Religious foundation knowledge from Kindergarten to Year 4 and a special thanks to Mrs Whipp, Mr Sherry and Mrs Mitchell for the support they gave the students this year. As first educators we know the role of our parents is so significant and we thank our parents for supporting and encouraging our students in this faith dimension.

WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING AT ST MICHAELS OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS?

STAGE 3 PUBLIC SPEAKING

At St Michael’s, we know that public speaking is a skill that benefits children for life. From Kindergarten onwards, our students have opportunities to speak at assemblies, present their learning, and share ideas with their peers. It’s always a joy to see their confidence grow as they learn to express themselves clearly and proudly.

This term, our students in Year 5 and Year 6 were involved in the public speaking program as part of the Diocesan Public Speaking Competition. This is an empowering program that helps to develop the skills of preparation, posture, pace, voice projection, and performance. Representatives from those classes presented their speeches before the school community. Next term, Kiri from Year 6 and Molly from Year 5 will be representing our school at the Western Region Diocesan Competition. Thank you to the Stage 3 teachers for supporting this wonderful initiative.

DIOCESAN CHRISTMAS STORY AND ART COMPETITION

Over the past few weeks, our Stage 3 students have been busy creating beautiful Christmas artworks inspired by Scripture. Their creativity and thoughtfulness have been truly impressive!

We have found out today that four of our students artworks will be hung in the Wollongong Art Gallery and will be part of the Christmas Art competition. Congratulations to Tobias, Amos, Oscar and Kiri. We are so proud of every student for the reflective and meaningful pieces they have produced.

All the artworks from Stage 3 will be displayed at school closer to Christmas so that our whole community can enjoy and celebrate the students’ efforts.

CATHOLIC MISSION

Recently, Leah and Indie represented our school with Mrs West at the launch of the 2025 Catholic Mission campaign. This year we will be raising awareness and funds for communities in Zambia, to help ensure children have access to food and education, giving them the chance to build a brighter future.

Our main fundraiser will be Crazy Hair day on 30 October. It was great to join with our other parish school, STA Bowral on this special occasion.

HSIE CURRICULUM EXCURSIONS

Students in Year 3 from our two parish schools of St Michael’s Mittagong and St Thomas Aquinas Bowral, travelled together into Sydney recently, to learn about early Australian history.  On their excursion they went to Hyde Park Barracks, The State Library and St Mary’s Cathedral. . What a wonderful experience for them all and what fantastic friendships were formed. Thank you to all the staff involved in organising and attending this excursion.

P&F SUBWAY DAY

Thank you to the members of the P&F who organised a fun subway day for our students. It is wonderful for the students to have an opportunity to have a special treat meal.

Grandparents, Godparents and Great Parents Day – A Joyous Celebration!

A couple of weeks ago, our school was filled with warmth, laughter, and love as we hosted our much-anticipated Grandparents, Godparents and Great Parents Day. The event was nothing short of spectacular, with an incredible turnout of cherished guests who play such meaningful roles in our students' lives.

The children truly shone as they showcased a delightful array of plays, dances, and musical performances. From heartfelt songs to energetic dance routines and creative drama pieces, each item was a testament to the students’ hard work, talent, and enthusiasm. The joy on their faces as they performed for their loved ones was absolutely priceless.

Our guests were treated to a morning of entertainment and connection, followed by a lovely morning tea that gave everyone a chance to mingle, share stories, and celebrate the special bonds that enrich our school community.

A huge thank you to all the staff, volunteers, and families who helped make the day so memorable.

2026 ENROLMENTS

If you know that you may be moving out of the area, or your child/children will not be attending St Michaels next year, can you please let our office staff know via email.  We are in the process of working out our classes for next year and we have had families ask if there is any availability for 2026 in some of the classes. Enrolment applications can be found here: Enrolment Application

THANK YOU

Thank you to Mrs Kate Armstrong and Mrs Genevieve Norrie for teaching Kindergarten and Year 3 over these past five weeks. I appreciate all they have done to support our students. Mrs Bourke-Nash and Mr Nash will be returning from their long service leave in Week 1 Term 4. They have had an amazing experience in Europe and I’m sure they will have lots of great stories to share with us when they return.

YEAR 5 ASSEMBLY PRAYER TODAY

Year 5 will be leading our Friday Assembly in prayer. Assembly will commence at 2:30pm to allow for all students to have returned from the swimming program and be able to attend assembly.

We are so excited to announce that next term on Friday 5th December, St Michael’s P&F in conjunction with our school community will be holding a Walk-a-thon at Lake Alexandra! This is the major fundraising event for the P&F this year.

I am very thankful for the team of P&F parents who are busy getting  organised for this wonderful day. All the details involving the walk-a-thon will be given to you very early in Term 4, however for the time being, can you please save the date.

The P&F Walk-a-thon committee are looking for volunteers on the day to help with the site organisation, house stations and the bbq. A survey will go out in Week 1 Term 4 for you to indicate if you can help in any way on the day. We will be needing an extensive group of parents to help us manage the site.

FIRST DAY OF TERM 4- SCHOOL WEBSITE PHOTOS

Students return on TUESDAY 14 OCTOBER.  Monday 13 October is a Staff Development Day

Students will be wearing their summer uniform for Term 4. On Tuesday 14 October, our CEO photographer will be coming to school to take updated photos for our school website. This was postponed from an earlier date this term due to rain.

On Tuesday 14 October, can all students in Kinder, Year 1, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 wear their summer uniform, including clean shoes, clean hats and school coloured ribbons for those students who tie their hair. YEAR 2 ARE ASKED TO WEAR THEIR SPORTS UNIFORM ON TUESDAY 14 OCTOBER, so we can take photos of students wearing the sports uniform for the website. Can I ask that shoes have been cleaned over the school holidays so our photos reflect the pride the students have in their uniform, which is noted whenever our students represent our school.

Best wishes also for the coming holidays. May you have a truly special time with your family.

God bless,

Katrina West
